But according to Neluka Dunning, owner of The Zip Yard, many everyday items can be refreshed quickly and affordably with simple repairs or alterations.
From curtains that no longer sit right to cushions that have lost their shape, small details can have a big impact on how a space feels.
“We see it all the time,” says Neluka. “People come in ready to replace something, but actually it just needs a small adjustment. Once it’s fixed, it completely changes how it looks and feels.”
A growing shift towards repair
Across The Zip Yard’s network of more than 50 stores, over 417,000 items were worked on last year, including more than 187,000 repairs.
While clothing remains at the heart of the business, there has been a noticeable increase in customers bringing in homeware items alongside their garments.
This reflects a wider shift in how people are thinking about their homes. As costs rise and awareness of waste grows, more households are choosing to repair rather than replace.
Five simple fixes that can transform your space
Often, it is the smaller details that make the biggest difference.
Curtains that are too long or uneven can make a space feel untidy. Adjusting the length creates a cleaner, more polished look.
Updating cushions with piping, fringing or new trims can give them a completely new feel without needing to replace them.
Reinforcing seams or repairing worn areas can extend the life of cushions, covers and other fabric pieces that still have plenty left to give.
Fixing splits early in sofa covers or furnishings helps prevent further damage and keeps everything looking well cared for.
Tablecloths, throws and covers can all be resized to suit your space better, making them more practical and more likely to be used.
“People often think they need to start again when something looks worn,” Neluka adds. “But a simple repair or update can make something feel new again. It is one of the easiest ways to refresh your home without spending a lot.”
With UK households discarding large volumes of textiles each year, making small repairs at home is not only cost-effective, it also helps reduce waste.
The message is simple. Before you replace it, take a second look. You might already have everything you need.
