Owning Clothes That Last Longer is a Growing Priority for UK Residents

As the first alterations company to sign up to the SCAP 2020 Commitment (Sustainable Clothing Action Plan), which aims to reduce the amount of carbon and water produced by the clothing industry, The Zip Yard was heartened to read the latest research by the UK’s leading
sustainability charity.

WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) found that more than half of people now
view the environmental impact of clothing as severe with two in three (63%) saying clothes made to last longer and look good are now major factors when they’re deciding what to buy.

Unsurprisingly, our habits have changed for the better during lockdown, with one in four
(23%) now repairing clothes and one in five (19%) keeping items for longer.

The latest findings build on previous research which found that the public wants new retail
options that prolong the life of clothes, including voucher schemes for clothing exchanges (46%) and pre-loved clothes (41%).

Both these options are particularly popular among younger and weekly clothes shoppers. WRAP is urging businesses to show their commitment to the environment by signing up to Textiles 2030, a ten-year programme which aims to transform UK clothing and home fabrics to reduce their impact on climate change.

Textiles 2030 will take the UK from a make-use-dispose culture to a circular one where goods are produced sustainably, used longer, and then re-used or recycled into new products.

The Zip Yard fully supports this latest initiative to counter the damaging ‘take, make, use,
throw’ culture.

Our dedicated franchisees and their teams across the UK will continue to encourage customers to play their part in saving the planet by making loved clothes last through repairs, alterations and restyling.

Together we CAN make a difference and ensure that thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothes and textiles are saved from landfill and incineration each year.
