Easing The Prom And Party Night Pressure

As we’ve got a passion for reuse, repairs and upcycling here at The Zip Yard, we love to share stories about folks across the UK who share our values.

A recent story that warmed our hearts comes from the South Wales valleys, where Maesteg Comprehensive School adopted a refreshing approach to the traditional prom party for its Year 11 students.

When the school’s headteacher realised that a pupil was reluctant to attend because of the cost of a new outfit, two PE department colleagues put out an appeal on social media for donations of prom gowns for pupils to use for free.

The response was overwhelming. Around 200 gowns, plus shoes and accessories, were donated by ex-pupils, local people and businesses. A wedding shop loaned 30 brand new dresses.

This is a win-win situation for the school and the wider community. It presents a real opportunity to discourage teenagers from joining in our throwaway society.

With local college students providing hair and make up for the big night, it all adds up to an authentic prom night experience at the fraction of the normal cost.

Prom season is a busy time for Zip Yard stores across the country. Our seamstresses swing into action shortening, taking in, letting out to make sure glamorous gowns fit perfectly.

If you’re looking for an alternative option for a prom or special occasion, vintage and charity shops have a wide range of dresses in all styles and sizes which we can upcycle to create a unique prom outfit.

Wedding dresses confined to the attic since the big day can also be given a new lease of life or mum and big sis may be happy to donate a dress that they’ve fallen out of love with.
